Back in the day, it used to be common for the early game in MMO to be nothing but verdant forests, lush meadows, and serene landscapes… while the endgame got hell-blasted death zones, volcano fields, and This Region is Brought to You By the Color Brown. In a way, we were punished by progressing, which didn’t seem fair.
But now these old tropes aren’t really that true any longer. Plenty of MMOs have discovered that players actually like a good dose of eye candy in the endgame, and so newer regions and expansions are just as pretty if not more so than beginning zones.
