Star Citizen’s total crowdfunding just hit over half a billion dollars

What can $500M get you? In the case of Star Citizen, more development coals shoveled into the fires of Chris Roberts’ vision: The game’s total funding has just crested half a billion dollars to keep RSI crawling along in its alpha phases.

The crests and falls offered in the funding chart’s weekly and daily breakdowns suggest that this new milestone can very likely be attributed to ship sales associated with community events such as last week’s Ship Showdown promotions and this week’s Pirate Week event.

The game’s community appears to be somewhat divided by the news, with disgruntled backers pointing out the glacial development pace and defenders either lauding the milestone, bracing themselves for backlash, or trying to brush off the figure as “just a number.”

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2022, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $500M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
